Alcohol Poisoning

Alcohol (beer, wine, and liquor), like any toxin, can have serious, even life-threatening consequences, if you overindulge in it. Alcohol poisoning is a medical emergency that occurs when your blood alcohol content reaches a dangerously high level. The scary part? It can sneak up on you faster than you think.

Recognizing the Symptoms

Alcohol poisoning is a serious condition that requires medical attention. What should you look for to know if someone is experiencing alcohol poisoning?

  • Confusion such as stumbling over words
  • Disorientation such as forgetting where they are
  • Unresponsiveness such being unable to wake them up no matter how hard you try
  • Vomiting
  • Difficulty breathing. Shallow breaths or long pauses between breaths
  • Pale or bluish skin which indicates a lack of oxygen reaching vital organs
  • Seizure

Prevention is Key

Here are some tips to ensure you can safely enjoy alcohol.

  • Know your limits: Everyone metabolizes alcohol differently, so be mindful of how much you can handle.
  • Eat before and while you drink: Food slows down alcohol absorption, giving your body time to process it.
  • Pace yourself: Sip your drinks slowly and alternate them with water or non-alcoholic beverages.
  • Look out for your friends: Don’t pressure anyone to drink more than they’re comfortable with, and be vigilant for signs of trouble.
  • Do not provide alcohol for anyone under the age of 21.
  • Do not serve alcohol to someone who may have already consumed too much alcohol.
